A sensual nature experience
Knuthenborg's English garden, spanning over 400 hectares, contains great values in terms of biodiversity. The ancient landscape, which combines old Danish and exotic trees with open grassy areas, is home to many rare birds, insects, and plants. We take care of both the plants and the animals, just as we take care of the park as a habitat. The future of the park is secured with a 100-year plan, which has been developed in collaboration with Realdania.
To support and enhance conservation and biodiversity outreach initiatives, you can embark on a sensory journey through the park's biodiversity. Enjoy the colorful butterflies or look out for some of the park's rare birds. Peer through the layers at all of our insect hotels, which are placed throughout the park, or see if you can catch a glimpse of a bat.
Securing the biodiversity of the park for the future
In recent years, we have implemented many major initiatives that ensure everything from bats, butterflies, salamanders, to various smaller insects can coexist alongside the park's large, exotic animals.
Biodiversity is also considered in all aspects, and our focus is to utilize our natural areas for the self-production of vegetables and meat, as well as using local and well-produced raw materials. Additionally, we plan to support and initiate research that sheds new light on climate and evolutionary history. One of the goals is to be self-sufficient in energy by 2029. You will also find 56 electric car chargers distributed throughout the park.
In addition to the old English garden itself, we take care of Lindholm Island, where, among other things, the three Danish toad species live. We secure their habitats and even breed natterjack toads for release. In this way, we ensure that there will also be toads on Lolland in the future.
In collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency, Knuthenborg released wild boars into the nearby Merretskov forest covering approximately 200 hectares. Here, the wild boars enhance the biotope and ensure, among other things, that there are more insects available for the bats.
An award we are particularly proud of
In September 2024, Knuthenborg was voted by guests (Voxmeter survey among 13,000 participants) as the attraction in Denmark with the best climate image.
