A social roarer
Adult male lions have shaggy manes that range in color from blonde to reddish-brown to black. The length and color of a male lion's mane are likely determined by age, genetics, and hormones.
If you looked at the body of a lion and a tiger without fur or skin, they would be so similar—apart from size—that only experts could tell them apart.
Lions are the world's most social big cats. They live in groups of related females, which can include more than 40 individuals.
When a lion eats, it doesn’t properly chew its food but swallows large chunks of meat at a time. In a single meal, a large lion can consume more than 50 kilograms—that’s roughly equivalent to 250 steaks from the butcher.

Which lions do we have in Knuthenborg?
When you visit us in Knuthenborg, you can enjoy the sight of our total of 8 lions.
Evacuated lions from Ukraine
We have 4 rescue lions from Ukraine. The lions have all been evacuated in an international collaboration, which, in addition to Knuthenborg Safaripark and Dyrenes Beskyttelse (Danish animal protection organization), consists of 17 other animal welfare organizations and zoological gardens in Europe, as well as the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, EAZA.
The lionesses, which you can see in Knuthenborg's park, are about three years old and originate from a zoo in Eastern Ukraine. Their names are Simba, Molly, and Ploy, and they have all been evacuated to Poznan Zoo in Poland, which has served as a transit point. From there, they were collected by staff from Knuthenborg Safari Park. It is a very atypical situation we find ourselves in with the continued need to evacuate large predators. Therefore, here at the Safari Park, we make ourselves available by offering safe environments and a secure future.
The latest rescue lion is the adult male lion Akeru, who is about 3 years old. He arrived in July 2024 and a couple of months ago was integrated with three young lion brothers who arrived from Copenhagen Zoo.
4 male lions from Denmark
In 2024, in addition to the Ukrainian male lion Akeru, we received 4 lions from Danish Zoos.
This summer, we welcomed three young lion brothers who, in late summer, were introduced to Akeru. After many months of observations and contact with the lions, the animal department decided to let the male lions come together. They have become a dynamic and calm group, thriving in each other's company and the new surroundings. Akeru and the three lion brothers can be seen at Tigerskoven's panoramic window.
A new, large male also arrived during the late summer. The male lion from Givskud Zoo is still getting used to the new surroundings and his large green enclosure.
The male lion is currently in an enclosure by himself in Tigerskoven and can be seen from the boardwalk along with the lionesses and our two tigers.
