Nature's snowplow
Bison have a muscular hump on their neck, which supports their heavy heads. It is also useful in snow, as the bison can swing its head from side to side and use it as a snowplow.
Although the bison is very large and compact, it is very agile. It can run at 60 km/h - almost as fast as a zebra.
Yellowstone National Park in the USA is the only place where the North American bison has lived continuously since prehistoric times, with a herd of about 4900 individuals.
The bison herd in Knuthenborg consists of a bull with his harem of several cows and their calves.
