African elephant

The world's largest land-living animal

  1. An elephant's trunk contains approximately 150,000 muscles and tendons.

  2. An elephant's ears function as a cooling system.

  3. Elephants communicate through vibrations in the ground and sound frequencies that humans cannot hear. This allows them to keep track of their herd members over long distances.

  4. The elephant is the only mammal that cannot jump.

Circus elephants retired in Knuthenborg

In the spring of 2018, a total ban on wild animals in circuses was introduced in Denmark, and in the autumn of 2019, it was decided that we at Knuthenborg Safaripark would take over the country's last four circus elephants, Lara, Djungla, Jenny, and Ramboline. You can see them in their large enclosure, the Elephant Plain.

The facility's four elephants have performed in circus shows all over Europe for 30 years, but here in their retirement at Knuthenborg Safari Park, they are to 'just be elephants' with natural behavior in a 140,000 m2 savannah-like enclosure.

The elephants can choose whether they want to be outside or inside, but you have the opportunity every day to visit the elephant stable and gain an insight into their conditions.

Europe's largest and most advanced elephant facility

The elephant enclosure is not just large – it is also a facility whose design is unique in Europe. Therefore, the enclosure should also serve as inspiration for other elephant keepers on how future elephant enclosures should be designed.

Activating the elephants' instincts

The size and layout of the facility allow us to engage the animals in various ways every day, challenging their instincts to forage for food. There will constantly be feeding tasks scattered throughout the large enclosure, which the animals will need to solve. The animals can also bathe in water, mud, and sand, as well as socialize with each other, as if they were on the real savannah in Africa.

The facility is becoming a reality

The design of the facility has been developed in collaboration with Dyrenes Beskyttelse (Danish animal protection organization), with a primary focus on ensuring maximum animal welfare.

The facility gives you, the guests, the feeling of looking out over the African savannah and enjoying the sight of these amazing animals. We hope to create a relationship between our guests and our animals, which ultimately inspires a desire to protect not just elephants, but our vulnerable nature around the world.
